On November 14th at 8 am, at the Skytop at Syracuse University, the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (NASRCC) is hosting a “Carpenters Skills Combine.”
Modeled after the annual NFL combine, the event will allow the union and employers to scout talented carpenters ready to immediately get “drafted” and take their careers to the next level. It also provides a pathway to a union apprenticeship for untrained members of the community who show aptitude, ambition and potential.
The Skills Combine will include a combination of hands-on trades work and basic physical tasks guided by instructors of the union’s apprenticeship and training program.
All participants in the Skills Combine will start with an event briefing and stretching/warm-up exercises. They will then be split into two groups.
A group for those with at least five years of experience in trade will move through stations that require them to perform tasks related to concrete forms, framing and drywall installation.
Less experienced participants will complete a separate, un-timed “obstacle course” that involves moving materials by lifting and carrying; climbing a step ladder, assembling and breaking down scaffolding (with assistance); and use of hand tools.
Participants should come dressed ready to work and bring their basic hand tools.
Following completion of physical tasks, experienced carpenters will have “spot” interviews with employer scouts and union reps. There will also be an information session for those who have an interest in becoming a union carpenter apprentice.
Below are links to our “Hype” videos and attached is a flyer on the event. Hopefully you will consider sharing these on your social media sites and plan to attend the event.
In an age of online recruiting and artificial intelligence, the Skills Combine will bring together local workers and employers in a meaningful way. It will provide a forum for demonstration, discussion and collaboration that can change lives.
