CLAY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Now that the
trees on the site have been cut down, Micron announced a construction
partner for the next phase of its $100 billion “megafab” project at the White
Pine Commerce Park in the Town of Clay.
The microchip manufacturing company chose Virginia-based
Bechtel to build the first portion of what’s planned to be the nation’s largest
semiconductor manufacturing facility.
“Bechtel will mobilize at the White Pine Commerce Park site
in Onondaga County immediately and scale its presence quickly,” a spokesperson
for Micron said in a statement.
In March, contractors cut down 330 acres of trees on the
site of the future Micron complex, fulfilling its legal deadline. It was also
only seven weeks after
workers began construction in January. Gilbane had been the general
contractor for the pre-construction phase.
“At peak construction, the work will support thousands of
skilled craft professionals, creating opportunities for union trades,
apprentices, local training program graduates, specialty contractors, suppliers
and construction professionals across New York,” a Micron spokesperson said in
a statement.
Micron and Bechtel representatives have promised to use
local labor for building the fabs and “develop the local supply chain and trade
labor ecosystem…ensuring state and local businesses and job seekers are poised
to benefit from the work ahead.”
Semiconductor manufacturing facilities are among the most
technically challenging facilities to build because they rely on cleanrooms (a
specially-engineered room where the fabrication process takes place),
vibration-proof foundations, and other complexities.
