Micron is building a $100+ billion semiconductor "megafab" campus - the largest private investment in New York history. Construction is expected to last 20+ years, with tens of thousands of construction jobs created over time.

The Micron Project will require specialized training throughout each phase of construction. During the initial phase, we anticipate a significant need for qualified riggers, members with experience in concrete construction, scaffold builders, and individuals with a variety of other specialized skill sets.
Please use the link below to select the training class(es) you are interested in attending.
Classes will be scheduled once sufficient interest has been received to form a class.
Thank you for your interest and commitment to preparing for opportunities on the Micron Project.
The first concrete was poured at the Micron construction site in the Town of Clay on Thursday.
It was another major milestone in the long-anticipated semiconductor facility project. It was just in January when local, state and federal elected officials, alongside Micron's top brass, that ground officially broke on the project.
Now, the project is ahead of schedule, the tech giant said.
The name of the day was "Concrete Progress." Much of the focus was on how Micron promises to advance Syracuse and Central New York to new age of technology.
Micron Picks Bechtel as construction partner to build first of four plants in semiconductor-making ‘fab’ complex.
Now that the trees on the site have been cut down, Micron announced a construction partner for the next phase of its $100 billion “megafab” project at the White Pine Commerce Park in the Town of Clay.
The microchip manufacturing company chose Virginia-based Bechtel to build the first portion of what’s planned to be the nation’s largest semiconductor manufacturing facility.
“Bechtel will mobilize at the White Pine Commerce Park site in Onondaga County immediately and scale its presence quickly,” a spokesperson for Micron said in a statement.
In March, contractors cut down 330 acres of trees on the site of the future Micron complex, fulfilling its legal deadline. It was also only seven weeks after workers began construction in January. Gilbane had been the general contractor for the pre-construction phase.
“At peak construction, the work will support thousands of skilled craft professionals, creating opportunities for union trades, apprentices, local training program graduates, specialty contractors, suppliers and construction professionals across New York,” a Micron spokesperson said in a statement.
Micron and Bechtel representatives have promised to use local labor for building the fabs and “develop the local supply chain and trade labor ecosystem…ensuring state and local businesses and job seekers are poised to benefit from the work ahead.”
Semiconductor manufacturing facilities are among the most technically challenging facilities to build because they rely on cleanrooms (a specially-engineered room where the fabrication process takes place), vibration-proof foundations, and other complexities.
More than three years after the initial announcement that Micron would construct four factories or fabs in the Town of Clay, the day has come for the groundbreaking on the estimated $100 billion facility.
Micron Technology announced today that it will start producing chips at its new manufacturing site in Central New York, in the Town of Clay in four years. This investment has been described as the largest in New York’s history.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the facility featured remarks from key figures, including Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-Deremer, both of whom highlighted its significance for American manufacturing. Gov. Kathy Hochul declared that this project represents a rebirth of manufacturing in Central New York, emphasizing local pride and future potential.
At the ceremony, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This is just the start. The best is yet to come.” Lutnick pointed out that this project will mark the largest investment in the history of New York, while Chavez-Deremer called the day a landmark moment for U.S. manufacturing. Chuck Schumer, U.S. Senator, emphasized that Micron’s site will become the largest semiconductor manufacturing facility in the country, demonstrating aspirations to surpass South Korea in this industry. He remarked, “We want to beat the South Koreans and become the largest in the world.” Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon stressed the bipartisan efforts that contributed to this achievement, stating, “The moment is so big. The opportunities are so big. We need everyone. This is about the American worker — America will lead the world in A-I dominance.” Senator Kirsten Gillibrand expressed pride in what New York can offer, saying, “Pride in what New York can do and what can be done at Micron.” The project will be significantly supported by funding from the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, passed under the Biden administration.
Contractors for Micron have completed tree clearing on the site of its future megafab campus only seven weeks after work began.
The company said, “Tree clearing at the White Pine Commerce Park site in Clay has been completed within the permitted timeframe, enabling Micron to begin the next phase of site preparation which includes grubbing, leveling, and mass excavation.”
Micron targeted an estimated 330 acres of trees needing to be taken down. This completion easily achieves the March 31 deadline.
Project Status Update: Site work is currently underway, with mass excavation in progress. The anticipated timeline for the installation of concrete foundations is August–September 2026. Project manpower will be phased in as follows:
Local members, NASRCC members, Travelling members, New Members.
All required training certifications must be UBC recognized certifications, except OSHA 10.
